EER-018 Laboratories

Location and Tools

All laboratories for EE-18 will take place in N106. Some lab assignments will involve the construction of circuits using TTL logic chips, wires and a protoboard. Other labs will use the Max+Plus logic simulator on the PCs in the lab. As a student you can obtain the software for free for your personal computer. You can obtain the Max+Plus software from Altera.

The last three laboratories will use the Motorola M68HC705JICS microcontroller development kit for assembly language programming, simulation and interfacing. For Max+Plus and M68HC705JICS laboratories you should bring a 3.5" floppy disk or plan to ftp your files to your idol account for safe keeping.

Lab Instructor Office Hours

David Oakley: N106 Tuesdays 5:30-6:30
Francois Cabestraing N105 Wednesdays 4:30-5:30

Prelabs

Almost all laboratories will require some work before the lab. In each lab handout you will find a section labeled "Prelab". You should read and complete any questions in this section before the lab session and bring the results to the scheduled lab session. The instructor will check to make sure that the prelab is completed before you begin the laboratory exercise.

Deliverables

After you complete the laboratory, you will either write a laboratory report or do a follow-up exercise to be handed in for a grade. These are due at the next lab session.

Lab Reports
The purposes of the lab report are to teach technical writing skills and to provide feedback on your understanding of the laboratory material. To help you with your reports, some guidelines are provided. The lab handout will also list specific items that should be included in the lab report for that particular lab. Lab reports are due one week from the date they are completed. Late reports will be penalized 20% if they are turned in within one week of the due date. Reports later than one week will not be accepted.

Lab Exercises
Some labs will not require formal lab reports, but will require a follow-up exercise that you should complete on your own. Instructions will be provided on what to hand in for each of these exercises.

Laboratory Schedule

Note: You will be provided with paper copies of each laboratory in advance of your lab. You do not have to print the pages below - they are provided only for your convenience.
